3/19 Circle vs. Oval/Straight line vs Curved - All Grades(Shapes and lines are both Elements of Art)

Good Morning to my Mar El Artists;
While I am at home I want to share with you the things I think about as an artist and an art teacher.

Many times I like to look at things around me while trying to notice the shapes that I can name.  There are also shapes that I cannot name.  These are some vocabulary words I will use while I am having my cup of tea this morning.
  • CIRCLE AND OVAL
  • STRAIGHT LINE VS CURVED LINE
  • SEMI CIRCLE
  • CYLINDER

For example, A mug is a cylinder shape. (depending on how you view it)

If I wanted to draw a mug to practice my art skills it would also depend on what direction I am looking at it.  Most times the mug is in front of me on the table. Not too often it would be on the floor and you look down at it. If you did put a mug on the floor it would look very different then the mug on your table.  So recognizing the mug and viewing it off to the side is another thing to think about. Looking straight down at a mug you would see a circle for the top of the mug.

You can practice your skill at drawing a mug off to the side, on your table, then to draw it looking down at it on the floor.

(Not my drawings)

Most times when I tell my class to draw a mug I want them to recite these few words.
1.  Oval
2. Two Straight Lines at the two edges of the oval,
3. A slightly curved line (connecting the two straight lines at the bottom of the mug)
A curved line at the bottom gives added evidence to show the mug is round.
Semi-Circle for the handle. (double line to make it a bit thicker)

As simple as you may think this is, it is a beginning lesson on perspective.
There are many ways to practice your skills in perspective drawing and we need to practice small.
Some might find it challenging. I am sure you will do great. Color your mug if you have any kind of colors available. Does not matter what you use.  Draw as many mugs you can, creating designs or patterns, favorite sayings on the mugs are great too.
Email to me your drawings, I would love to see them.
