WellCheq

WellCheq was piloted at our Robertsville campus during the 2021-2022 school year as a building wide initiative to promote social-emotional wellbeing by fostering the skills of self-awareness, self-expression, and self-advocacy, core emotional intelligence skills. EQ+IQ=SUCCESS! Our goal is to roll out the program across elementary schools this school year.

What is WellCheq?

WellCheq Overview:

WellCheq was created by Jodi Miller and Dr. Lieny Jeon, two researchers at The Johns Hopkins University School of Education. Launched in October 2020, WellCheq has been used in schools across the country. In their previous studies, teachers reported that they have found it helpful for supporting students, and students shared that they liked being able to express themselves privately.

MTPS is using this tool for a few reasons:

  • Students’ social and emotional well-being is our priority. We know that there have been stressful times and want to make sure we are checking in with all of our students. WellCheq gives students an opportunity to share how they are feeling, so we can better support them during these challenging circumstances.
  • We know that sometimes students may have difficulty asking for help when they need it. This tool is designed to identify individuals who may be struggling, so we can proactively reach out to them.
  • We want to make sure students feel heard. By asking students how they are feeling, with the hope to give them a safe, private space to express themselves.
  • We want to encourage students to be mindful. The simple act of pausing to check in with oneself promotes self-awareness and enables students to better regulate their emotions. It can also allow students to offload some of these emotions in an effort to work through them.

What the tool is not:

  • A diagnostic measure.
  • An evaluative tool for students or teachers

How this data will be used:

Your child’s data is only shared with your teacher and school leaders so we can best support them. If students are consistently reporting low well-being or selecting negative emotions, we want to check in with them. We hope to help students problem solve and identify resources that may be available. For students who are feeling well, we want to share their joy.

The WellCheq team puts a premium on data security and protects students’ information. Although your teacher or school leaders can see your child’s responses, the WellCheq team cannot see your child’s name or any other personal information. It is impossible for the WellCheq team to link a child to his or her responses.

Taking care of your student is our district's highest priority. Students who feel supported, safe and cared for are better able to reach their potential. We are hoping this tool can help students feel heard and seen. Use of WellCheq is optional, and you can opt your child out at any time without any negative repercussions. The data collected is treated as confidential and is only used to better meet the needs of your learner. In the event you wish to learn more about WellCheq, you may find more information below.
