Welcome to First Grade! I am looking forward to a fun and rewarding year with your children! We will begin the year by establishing good work habits and setting up routines. We will review basic skills in math, reading, and writing.

Guided Reading: We will begin the year by listening to books and poems related to starting school, such as "First Day Jitters" and the "Night Before First Grade". We will also begin our Making Meaning program which will teach reading comprehension strategies good readers use such as "making connections".

Writing: The children will begin writing and illustrating narratives with a topic sentence, at least three details, and a closing.

Math: Our enVision math program will begin with a unit on understanding addition. At the end of each topic, we will have a math test. In the next few weeks, I will be distributing usernames and passwords for each of the students so that they can access the enVision 2.0 math materials from home, as well as ST Math, and IXL.

Social Studies: We will begin the year by discussing school, classroom, bus, playground, and fire drill rules. We will also learn about Johnny Appleseed.

I look forward to meeting you this month at Back to School Night! In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me by note, email, or phone with any questions or concerns you might have.
