Current Event Information Sheet

Every Friday afternoon, the class will be sharing information about important current events from around the world.  Understanding current history is just as important as learning about history from the past.  In order to stay current on events happening all around us, each student is going to have the chance to choose a current event to share with the class.  Here are some guidelines to help you as we begin our study on current events:

  • Choose a current event from a newspaper throughout the week it’s due
  • Cut out the newspaper article and read through it carefully
  • Use the Current Event Sheet to summarize the current event
  • Tell what newspaper the article came from, the date of the article, the section it came from, and the title of the article
  • Write a 5-7 sentence summary of the article that you’ve chosen
  • Explain in 2-3 sentences why you’ve found this current event interesting
  • Write in 2-3 sentences something you’ve learned from this article
  • Make sure you attach your article to the back of the Current Event Sheet for full credit
  • Have fun as you learn about events going on in our world!!

This year, students will be participating in two marking periods of social studies followed by two marking periods of science.  During marking periods 1 and 2, current events should focus on news categories traditionally associated with social studies (World News, US News, Local News, Politics, Economics, etc).  During marking periods 3 and 4, current events should focus on news categories traditionally associated with science (Health, Medicine, Technology, Animals, Environment, Space, Weather, etc).  Your child will have a schedule when they are presenting and should not choose the same category twice.  (Please check attached notice!!)  While your child may need help deciphering parts of the article, it is important to let the students write the summary in their own words.  Please discuss the article with them and explain anything that is confusing, but let them fill out the Current Event Sheet independently.  I am very excited to begin our study on current events!
