Chapter 2: Kindergarten Classes

Kindergarten classes come to the Library once a week. Each 40 minute class is made up of a lesson,
read-aloud, game, activity, project, or technology time, and ends with book check out which we call "Book Shopping." Students are allowed to check out a new book each time they come, providing the last book was returned.

Our school Library is a busy and engaging environment, which offers students independent choices once book check out is over and if there is still some extra time before the class period ends. Students can choose from the following:
  • read their checked out Library book
  • read magazines
  • read in the book corner from a cart of books
  • work on a coloring sheet or word search
  • complete any unfinished work

What is a shelf marker?
A shelf marker is a long piece of tag board paper. Each student has their own shelf marker and were allowed to color and design their own to personalize it. The shelf marker serves two purposes:
  • holds the place on the bookshelf during book shopping so books go back in the proper spot
  • a bar code label on one side of the shelf marker serves as student Library cards
